Salisbury Steak Recipe

Salisbury steak is a classic comfort food that brings together simple ingredients in a rich and satisfying way. At its core, it consists of seasoned ground beef shaped into tender patties, which are then cooked and gently simmered in a savory onion and mushroom gravy. The dish is known for its deep, hearty flavor, created by combining beef with ingredients like onions, garlic, and seasonings that enhance its taste and aroma.

What makes Salisbury steak especially appealing is its homestyle feel. Itโ€™s the kind of meal often associated with family dinners and cozy evenings, offering warmth and familiarity in every bite. The gravy plays a major role, adding moisture and richness while complementing the beef with earthy mushroom notes and the sweetness of caramelized onions.

This dish is also versatile and easy to pair with a variety of sides. Creamy mashed potatoes are the most popular choice, as they soak up the flavorful gravy beautifully. However, it also goes well with rice, noodles, or even steamed vegetables for a balanced meal. Simple to prepare yet deeply satisfying, Salisbury steak remains a timeless favorite that continues to be loved for its comforting taste and wholesome appeal.

Ingredients

For the steaks

  • 500 g ground beef
  • ยฝ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 1 tbsp oil (for cooking)

For the gravy

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 onion (sliced)
  • 1 cup mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the patties

In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, chopped onion, garlic, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Combine gently and shape into oval patties.

2. Sear the steaks

Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4โ€“5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they will finish cooking later).

3. Cook onions and mushrooms

In the same pan, melt butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened and lightly browned.

4. Make the gravy

Sprinkle flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir well and cook for 1โ€“2 minutes. Gradually pour in beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce and mustard. Simmer until thickened.

5. Combine and simmer

Return the patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low heat for 10โ€“15 minutes until fully cooked and tender.

6. Serve

Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables. Spoon extra gravy over the top.
