How to Make Burger Bun Bread

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a large bowl, combine the lukewarm water, softened butter, egg, sugar, salt, yeast, and flour.

Mix until a shaggy dough forms. Knead by hand for about 10 minutes or with a stand mixer for 6โ€“7 minutes until the dough becomes soft, smooth, and slightly stretchy. The dough should feel slightly tacky but not overly sticky.

Step 2: First Rise

Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl and cover with a towel or plastic wrap.

Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, or until nearly doubled in size. Rising time may vary depending on kitchen temperature.

Step 3: Divide and Shape

Gently punch down the dough to release air bubbles.

Divide it into 8 equal pieces for large burger buns. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and flatten slightly into a disk about 3 inches wide.

Place the shaped buns onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each bun.

Step 4: Second Rise

Cover the buns lightly and let them rise again for about 1 hour until puffy.

During the final 15 minutes of rising, preheat your oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).

Step 5: Add Toppings

Brush the tops with half of the melted butter.

For seeded buns, brush with egg wash first, then sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds on top. The egg wash helps the seeds stick and gives the buns a shiny bakery-style finish.

Step 6: Bake the Buns

Bake for 15โ€“18 minutes until the tops turn beautifully golden brown.

Remove from the oven and immediately brush with the remaining melted butter for a soft, satiny crust.

Step 7: Cool and Serve

Transfer the buns to a cooling rack and allow them to cool before slicing.

Serve with beef burgers, veggie patties, grilled chicken, pulled pork, or your favorite sandwich fillings.

Donโ€™t Add Too Much Flour

A slightly soft dough creates fluffier buns.

Shape Smoothly

Smooth dough balls create bakery-style rounded buns after baking.
