Since Will Smith’s now-infamous “slap” at the 94th Academy Awards, previous shocking events from award seasons past are being revisited. While there were several highlights at this year’s Oscars, from Ariana DeBose’s history-making victory to Coda winning the top prize of the night, they were overshadowed by Smith’s behavior. In the aftermath of the Oscars 2022 “slap,” it has dominated the conversation.
Other celebrities who have made questionable decisions at public events are now being scrutinized, in a quest to somewhat validate Smith’s actions. The 1997 MTV Movie Awards is one such occasion, when Jim Carrey attempted to kiss other attendees. Alicia Silverstone, Jim Carrey also tried to kiss Will Smith.
Jim Carrey Shocks Alicia Sliverstone With On-Stage Kiss
At the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, Alicia Silverstone was compelled to hand out the award for Best Comedic Performance, which she did while still a teenager. Silverstone was just 20 years old when she played Cher Horowitz in the 1995 film Clueless, during which time she was best recognized.
“And the award goes to… Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy,” Silverstone is heard saying in the now-viral clip.
In this category, Carrey was competing against Chris Farley, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams. The then-35-year-old actor made no allusion to planting a surprise kiss on Silverstone in his acceptance speech. The video can be seen in its entirety here.
According to a new report from People.com.au, Alicia Silverstone was “humiliated” by Jim Carrey’s behavior during the awards ceremony. They also say that after the show, Carrey apologized to Silverstone.
Jim Carrey Attempts To ‘Kiss’ Will Smith
Some celebrities have spoken out about the Oscars 2022, with some supporting Will Smith and others excusing his behavior. Those who have criticized Smith have incurred the ire of Twitter. Jim Carrey is an example; since commenting on Smith’s conduct at the Oscars, he has been ‘cancelled’ by the internet.
“I remember watching this as a kid and wondering why Jim Carrey forced a kiss upon Alicia Silverstone when she clearly didn’t want it… I was disgusted then, and I’m still disgusted now.” A 25-year-old video left one viewer dissatisfied: “I recall seeing this as a teenager and wondering why Jim Carrey made Alicia Silverstone kiss him when she clearly didn’t want to… I’m still repulsed.”
This is the same Will Smith we saw in the 1990s, when he and Jim Carrey engaged in a heated kiss at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards. One Twitter user wrote: “Today’s standards (whether you agree or not), this is s-xual assault and he should be arrested. If Will has to go, so does Jim.”
