Since Will Smith’s now-infamous “slap” at the 94th Academy Awards, previous shocking events from award seasons past are being revisited. While there were several highlights at this year’s Oscars, from Ariana DeBose’s history-making victory to Coda winning the top prize of the night, they were overshadowed by Smith’s behavior. In the aftermath of the Oscars 2022 “slap,” it has dominated the conversation.

Other celebrities who have made questionable decisions at public events are now being scrutinized, in a quest to somewhat validate Smith’s actions. The 1997 MTV Movie Awards is one such occasion, when Jim Carrey attempted to kiss other attendees. Alicia Silverstone, Jim Carrey also tried to kiss Will Smith.

Jim Carrey Shocks Alicia Sliverstone With On-Stage Kiss

At the 1997 MTV Movie Awards, Alicia Silverstone was compelled to hand out the award for Best Comedic Performance, which she did while still a teenager. Silverstone was just 20 years old when she played Cher Horowitz in the 1995 film Clueless, during which time she was best recognized.

“And the award goes to… Jim Carrey, The Cable Guy,” Silverstone is heard saying in the now-viral clip.

In this category, Carrey was competing against Chris Farley, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams. The then-35-year-old actor made no allusion to planting a surprise kiss on Silverstone in his acceptance speech. The video can be seen in its entirety here.

According to a new report from People.com.au, Alicia Silverstone was “humiliated” by Jim Carrey’s behavior during the awards ceremony. They also say that after the show, Carrey apologized to Silverstone.

Jim Carrey Attempts To ‘Kiss’ Will Smith

Some celebrities have spoken out about the Oscars 2022, with some supporting Will Smith and others excusing his behavior. Those who have criticized Smith have incurred the ire of Twitter. Jim Carrey is an example; since commenting on Smith’s conduct at the Oscars, he has been ‘cancelled’ by the internet.

“I remember watching this as a kid and wondering why Jim Carrey forced a kiss upon Alicia Silverstone when she clearly didn’t want it… I was disgusted then, and I’m still disgusted now.” A 25-year-old video left one viewer dissatisfied: “I recall seeing this as a teenager and wondering why Jim Carrey made Alicia Silverstone kiss him when she clearly didn’t want to… I’m still repulsed.”

This is the same Will Smith we saw in the 1990s, when he and Jim Carrey engaged in a heated kiss at the 1997 MTV Movie Awards. One Twitter user wrote: “Today’s standards (whether you agree or not), this is s-xual assault and he should be arrested. If Will has to go, so does Jim.”

What Did Jim Carrey Have To Say About The Oscars 2022?

In the midst of his criticism of Will Smith’s public celebrations at this year’s Oscars, Carrey’s shocking smooch clip has resurfaced.

On March 29th 2022, Carrey appeared on CBS This Morning to voice his displeasure with Smith’s conduct: “I was sickened by the standing ovation. Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it really felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” Carrey said.

After King discussed Chris Rock’s decision to not prosecute, Carrey added, “I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because the video will be there forever.” Other celebrities, such as Zoë Kravitz, have also been targeted in Smith’s criticism.
