When Gray was only 19, he decided to turn professional after attending the Alpha Boys School. While performing on stage, he easily manipulated his image to match each song’s vibe; appearing either gritty or suave as needed. Additionally, he became the first singer ever to praise a sound system in a recorded piece when Dodd released “On the Beach” in 1959. Out of all of Sir Coxsone Downbeat’s releases under Clement Dodd and Studio One label, “On the Beach” proved to be one of the most popular pieces.

He was one of the first artists to be produced by Chris Blackwell, in 1960, and his “Patricia” single was the first record ever released by Island Records. “Please Let Me Go”, his first single, went to the top of the charts in Jamaica. The song featured a guitar solo from Dennis Sindrey of Australia, who played with The Caribs studio band on many early Owen Gray recordings. His later releases did well too in the United Kingdom and finally led Gray to move there in 1962.
