Brown was born in Houston, Texas, to a Jamaican mother and Cuban father. He is of Jamaican and Cuban heritage. At the age of 15, Brown came out as gay. Brown grew up in Coral Springs, Florida, where he graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 1999.
Following the shooting at a school in 2018, Brown became an active member of the Never Again MSD movement founded by students, calling for stricter gun control laws. In 2007, Brown was informed that he was the father of a ten-year-old boy named Jason, who would be taking custody of him in 2007. Chris, Brown’s half-brother, was adopted by him in 2010.

Karamo was best recognized for his debut on the MTV reality program The Real World: Philadelphia in 2004, when he became the first openly gay black male on reality TV.
He later took part in the Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Inferno II, where he was eliminated in episode six.
