Sidney Poitier, a Bahamian-American actor who became the first Black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for 1963’s Lilies of the Field, has died. He died at the age of 94.
Was Sidney Poitier married?
Juanita Hardy was Poitier’s spouse from 1950 until 1965. They resided in a Hudson River mansion in Stuyvesant, New York, with their three children. Poitier began a nine-year relationship with actress Diahann Carroll in 1959.
He married Joanna Shimkus, a former actress from Canada, on January 23, 1976. They were together until his death.

In response to Poitier’s death, Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper stated, “I was conflicted with tremendous sadness and a feeling of celebration when I heard of Sir Sidney Poitier’s passing.”
