Neal Adams was an American comic book artist. He was the co-founder of graphic design firm Continuity Associates, and a creators’ rights advocate who assisted in the negotiation of a pension and commemoration for Superman creators Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel. DC Comics co-created Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat, and John Stewart during his time there.

During their Green Lantern/Green Arrow run, O’Neil and Adams introduced a more adult, realistic tone with stories like “Snowbirds Don’t Fly,” in which Green Arrow’s young ward Roy “Speedy” Harper is shown to have become hooked on narcotics.

In 1998, Neal Adams was inducted into the Eisner Awards’ Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame, the Harvey Awards’ Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame at the Inkwell Awards in 2019. Neal Adams was born on June 15, 1941, on Governors Island in New York City.

He grew up moving from one army base to another throughout Brooklyn and Germany thanks to his military family. He was Jewish. After graduating from School of Industrial Art High School in Manhattan, he attended New York University for a year before transferring to Union College for three years.

In the mid-1960s, writer/artist Jack Kirby had Adams draw a comic strip based on the television series Ben Casey, which inspired his debut in DC Comics as a freelancer in 1967. That year he also joined the cast of Strange Adventures as Deadman’s artist.

Adams and Dennis O’Neil worked together on early runs on Batman and Green Lantern/Green Arrow during the 1970s. The pair revitalized Batman’s gothic roots as a counterpoint to the TV series of the 1960s for Batman. Meet Neal Adams’s Wife, Marilyn Adams.
