Mitch McConnell is a politician who has been the senior United States Senator from Kentucky since 1985. He is the second Kentuckian to serve as a Republican Leader in the Senate, after Alben Barkley. He is also the longest-serving U.S. Senator from Kentucky in history.

McConnell was born in Sheffield, Alabama, on February 20, 1942. His family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when he was a child. He graduated from duPont Manual High School and received his B.A. from the University of Louisville in 1964. In 1984, McConnell ran for the United States Senate against Democratic incumbent Walter Dee Huddleston. McConnell defeated Huddleston by a margin of 53% to 47%.
