Mitch McConnell is a politician who has been the senior United States Senator from Kentucky since 1985. He is the second Kentuckian to serve as a Republican Leader in the Senate, after Alben Barkley. He is also the longest-serving U.S. Senator from Kentucky in history.
McConnell was born in Sheffield, Alabama, on February 20, 1942. His family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, when he was a child. He graduated from duPont Manual High School and received his B.A. from the University of Louisville in 1964. McConnell was awarded an honorary degree from Georgetown College in 1990 and an honorary degree from Morehead State University in 1999.
After graduating from college, McConnell worked as an intern for Senator John Sherman Cooper and as a staff member for Senator Marlow Cook. He later worked as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald Ford. In 1977, McConnell was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives, where he served two terms.
