John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994), commonly known as the Murderer Clown, was an American serial killer and rapist convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering at least 33 adolescent boys and young men in a series of murders in Chicago, Illinois, between 1972 and 1978.

All but one of Gacy’s documented killings took place within his Norwood Park Township house; his victims were usually brought there by force or deceit, and all but one were killed by asphyxiation or strangling with a tourniquet (his first victim was stabbed to death).

Gacy buried 26 of his victims in his home’s crawl area, buried three more victims elsewhere on his property, and dumped the remains of his final four known victims in the Des Plaines River. Gacy was found guilty of 33 murders and condemned to die for 12 of them on March 13, 1980.

On May 10, 1994, he was killed by lethal injection at Stateville Correctional Center after 14 years on death row. Due to his philanthropic activities at fundraising events, parades, and children’s parties, where he would dress as “Pogo the Clown,” a figure he created himself, Gacy became known as the “Killer Clown.”
