Cobb has received Fulbright and Ford fellowships. Cobb began his professional writing career while attending Howard University, initially publishing in One, a short-lived periodical. He began contributing to the Washington City Paper shortly thereafter.

From 1993 until present, he has hosted a weekly radio show on the federally owned NPR network that focuses on social issues. He began hosting his first national program on YSB magazine, a part of the Black Entertainment Television business empire, in 1993.
