Darnella Frazier , the teenager who filmed George Floyd‘s fatal encounter with police, testified before a Minnesota House committee on Tuesday about what she saw that day. Frazier, who was just 17 at the time, said she had gone to the Cup Foods store with her nine-year-old cousin to get snacks when she saw Floyd inside of a police car.

She said she started recording because she “knew it wasn’t right. I was scared, I was confused,” Frazier told lawmakers. “I felt like it could have been me. When I look at George Floyd, I look at my dad, I look at my brothers, I look at my cousins, my uncles,” Frazier said. “It’s so sad that he was in pain and crying for help and nobody helped him.” Darnella Frazier: Recorded George Floyd Murder Video.

Frazier’s video of Floyd’s arrest, which showed former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, sparked worldwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism. Chauvin was later convicted of murder and is awaiting sentencing.

Frazier said she has experienced post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety since filming Floyd’s death, and urged lawmakers to “do something” to address racial injustice in the state.

“I don’t think I should have had to record that,” Frazier said. “I shouldn’t have had to be the one that put my phone down. I just hope that going forward, things will get better,” she added. “I hope that our generation and the next generation won’t have to go through this same pain and hurt.”

Minnesota lawmakers are considering a number of police reform measures in the wake of Floyd’s death, including a ban on chokeholds and no-knock warrants. The state’s House of Representatives is expected to vote on the reform package later this week.
