Two years after the poor teacher comedy “Bad Teacher” hauled in $216 million at the worldwide box office, it was reported that Columbia Pictures had greenlit a sequel. However, roughly ten years have passed since the announcement, and there has yet to be a sequel, leaving comedy lovers wondering if “Bad Teacher 2” will ever become reality. While it appears that the opportunity for a second installment has passed, Hollywood’s affection for well-known IPs ensures that there is always an opportunity for a follow-up down the road.
After all, “Bad Teacher” already has a spiritual follow-up. In 2014, CBS turned the film into a short-lived television series. Despite the fact that just three episodes were produced, “Bad Teacher” the show had a surprisingly strong comedic cast.
The ensemble cast included Ari Graynor as the titular bad teacher, Kristin Davis, David Alan Grier, Sara Gilbert, Ryan Hansen, and Colin Hanks. Unfortunately, the comedy wasn’t a success with critics or fans of the film; thus it was swiftly canceled. Aside from a less-than-promising update from director Jake Kasdan since then, things have been quiet on the “Bad Teacher” front.
Bad Teacher 2 Renewed or Cancelled
According to director Jake Kasdan, “Bad Teacher 2” is unlikely to happen. In a Moviehole.net interview in 2018, Kasdan said that the sequel was stalled due, at least in part, to a lack of inspiration. “I’m afraid it’s probably unlikely at this stage,” he added about a second “Bad Teacher” film.
Even if Kasdan has a brilliant story for a sequel, there’s another roadblock in its way: During an interview with Gwyneth Paltrow in 2020, Diaz revealed she is retiring from acting. The actress said she wanted to be independent from the world of celebrity and that retirement gave her “a calm in my soul,” according to Vanity Fair.
Although the production company could opt to go ahead with a sequel without Diaz, her enthusiasm and comedic timing were key elements of the original’s success. It would probably be safer to reboot “Bad Teacher” rather than attempt to develop a direct follow-up to the film unless she changes her mind and resumes acting in the near future. But for now, at least, that isn’t an issue, because the crew behind “Bad Teacher” has moved on to other projects.
It would be interesting to see Diaz play a teacher who embraces bad behavior once again, but the “Bad Teacher” sequel appears to be on an indefinite summer break — at least for the time being.
