In 2018, Bersten was on tour with Dancing with the Stars: Live when he began to have severe stomach discomfort that lasted for about a minute before dissipating.
He then went to the hospital for a check-up, where he was informed that his blood had a high calcium level and it might not be anything to worry about.
The doctor discovered four abnormal lymph nodes, which was followed by an excision of the parathyroid glands.
