When We All Fall Asleep Song Lyrics Explained: Where Do We Go? by Billie Eilish is a 2017 record that does not fit the typical mold of what we see in the mainstream. Instead, it’s an album deeply rooted in teen angst and existentialism.
Upon its release, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? hit number one on iTunes and has since been sitting high on the charts of many further retailers. This makes sense as many teens have turned to the song “you should see me in a crown” for their anthem of self-harm and depression. The album has received mixed reviews from critics who claim that its depressing atmosphere just isn’t entertaining enough to listen to . However, I beg to differ. This album is a masterpiece in itself because of its ability to capture the true essence of what it means to be a teen living in 2018.
When We All Fall Asleep Song Explained
It can be heard through out this album that Billie Eilish has drawn influence from many artists such as My Chemical Romance and The 1975. Her voice often takes on a nasally tone which may irk some listeners, but she uses this technique masterfully as her lyrics truly resonate with those who’ve felt so low they didn’t even know how they could go on anymore. She places these feelings into words and makes them easy enough for young adults to understand without being patronizing or condescending.
Lyrically, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is a reflection on the turmoil of being young in an unforgiving world. Billie takes influence from some of her personal experiences growing up, such as her brother’s mental illness and feeling out of place due to her unique looks. The album reflects upon feelings of isolation and unease with oneself that many teens have felt for years.
In particular, the song “i love you” is a prime example of how Billie can twist a phrase into something so cruel sounding but still manage to leave the listener filled with hope by saying she loves them at last. In terms of production, it sounds more like a demo than anything professional because of its simple chord progression and standard drum beat throughout most tracks. One exception is the song “ilomilo” which features a soft and upbeat melody that sounds like it belongs in a music box, yet still provides an eerie and wistful atmosphere.
The record was produced by Billie herself because she wanted to capture the rawness of teenage angst. She embraces her imperfections and makes them part of the track so you can feel all of her emotions go into making each piece . This is why this album has proven to be such a success despite its lack of catchy choruses and simple lyrics . It’s for those who’ve never considered themselves to be truly heard before.
When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is not meant to be easy listening nor does it need any deep critical analysis to understand. It’s for those who relate to Billie’s pain and have felt so low they didn’t know how they could go on anymore. We need more albums like this that put the young adult experience into words with no sugar coating or bullshit attached.
People are finally starting to see that teens are here too despite what many may think. And Billie Eilish has proven that she is one of them, ready to take on the world with all its uncertainty and chaos waiting for her at every turn . I can’t wait to see what will come next but until then, I’ll be listening to When We All Fall Asleep , Where Do We Go? because it has proven itself as an album worth remembering for what it set out to do.
See, not super deep analysis but what I wanted to do was get people thinking about why this album is so special and moreover, the way it makes you feel . I know for me personally whenever I listen to “when the party’s over” or ” goodbye” , i feel like there’s somebody there that gets it because they’ve felt exactly what i’m feeling before. Wherever that may be in their life.
