Susan Johnson is the mother of Adam Johnson who used to played as a forward at professional ice hockey. He played 13 games in the National Hockey League with the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. He also suited up for the Augsburger Panther and the Nottingham Panthers in Europe in addition to the Malmö Redhawks.
Her son Adam Johnson was killed when a skate slashed his neck during an accident on the ice, in October of 2023. South Yorkshire Police confirmed the arrest on 14 Nov 2023 after the 07 days of crime took place but did not reveal the identity of the suspect. Johnson was eventually transferred to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was 29 years old. News of Johnson’s death was publicly withheld until the following morning while Johnson’s relatives were alerted.
The South Yorkshire Police opened an investigation into Johnson’s death. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which runs ice hockey in England and Wales below the Elite League, made neck guards mandatory starting in 2024 after Johnson’s death.
