Priscilla Mary Truss, Liz Truss’s mother, is a retired teacher who lives in Oxfordshire. She has two sons and four grandchildren. She is also a member of the Conservative Party. Moreover, her daughter, Liz was educated at Fairfax School in Tunbridge Wells and then at Godolphin and Latymer School in Hammersmith, London. She read Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College, Oxford. After graduation, she worked for Shell UK from 1992 to 1994.
In 1995, Liz Truss joined the civil service, working in the HM Treasury. From 2000 to 2002, she worked as a senior adviser to the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown. In 2003, she left the civil service to work for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a management consultant.
Liz Truss has been a member of various parliamentary committees, including the Transport Committee (2010-2015) and the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (2015-2017). In July 2016, Liz Truss was appointed as the Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor by Prime Minister Theresa May. She was born in Oxford, but when she was just four years old, her family emigrated to Scotland. Her mother was a nurse, instructor, and member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Her father was an emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds. She has spoken about the difficult and testing environment she grew up in, including how her father wouldn’t back her when she ran for Parliament as a Conservative.
Liz Truss was a councilor for Eltham South in Greenwich from 2006 to 2010 and then served as the chair of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association from 1998 until 2000. The 46-year-old failed to win a seat in Hemswoth or Calder Valley, so she was chosen for the South West Norfolk Seat, which she won in 2010 and has held ever since.
From 2012 to 2014, she was Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Childcare and Education in David Cameron’s government before becoming Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. In 2016, Theresa May named her as Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor and Chief Treasury Officer.
