Sajak then attended Columbia College Chicago as a journalism student. He served in the U.S. Army as a disc jockey on Armed Forces Radio during the Vietnam War.
After his discharge from the army, Sajak began his career as a weatherman at an NBC affiliate in Baltimore, Maryland. He then worked as a newsanchor for a time before moving on to hosting various game shows. His big break came in 1981 when he was chosen to host the hit game show Wheel of Fortune. He has been hosting the show ever since and is currently signed on to continue hosting it through 2022.
