Meet Mitch McConnell’s Mother
McConnell was born on February 20, 1942, to Julia Odene and Addison Mitchell “A.M.” McConnell II (1917–1990). He was born in Sheffield, Alabama, and grew up in Athens, Alabama, where his great-grandfather Robert Hayes McConnell Sr. and his uncle Addison Mitchell McConnell ran the McConnell Funeral Home.
He is of Scots-Irish, English, and German descent. One of his ancestors served on the American side in the American Revolutionary War. In 1944, when he was only two years old, McConnell’s upper left leg became paralysed as a result of a polio infection. The Roosevelt Warm Springs Institute for Rehabilitation treated him.
The therapy may have prevented him from being disabled for the remainder of his life. McConnell stated that his family “nearly went bankrupt” as a result of the treatment.

Julia Odene Dean is the mother of Mitch McConnell, who is currently the Senate Minority Leader. Not much is known about her early life, but it is known that she had a son with Addison Mitchell McConnell II in 1942.

What we do know about Julia Odene Dean comes from her son’s autobiography, The Long Game. In it, he mentions that his mother was a big fan of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. She was also a big supporter of civil rights, even though she grew up in the segregated South. It is clear that she had a major influence on her son’s political views.
Unfortunately, not much else is known about Julia Odene Dean. She passed away in 1985, three years before her son was elected to the Senate.
While we may not know much about Julia Odene Dean, it is clear that she was a strong and influential woman. She raised her son to be a successful politician and he has credited her for his success. Without a doubt, she was an important figure in his life.
