Hugh O’Leary is best known as the husband of Liz Truss, who is a British politician who has served as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs since 2021 and as Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019. She has been Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Norfolk since 2010. She has served in various cabinet positions under David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. She previously worked at Shell, Cable & Wireless, and the think tank Reform.
Truss was elected to Parliament in the 2010 general election as a member of the Conservative Party. She has called for policy changes in several areas of legislation, including childrearing, mathematics education, and the economy. Liz Truss married Hugh O’Leary, an accountant she met at the 1997 Conservative Party Conference, in 2000. The couple have two daughters. Truss describes herself as a Christian. Hugh O’Leary is a political consultant who has worked on numerous campaigns in the United Kingdom, including that of his wife, Liz Truss. He is also the author of “The Battle for British Politics: How Thatcherism Changed Everything.”
O’Leary was born in London and raised in Ireland. He attended Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a degree in politics and economics. After graduation, he worked as a political adviser to several Members of Parliament in the UK before becoming a political consultant. In 2010, O’Leary helped lead the successful campaign to elect Truss as the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk. He has since worked on her re-election campaigns in 2015 and 2017.
