Craig Carton Arrest and conviction for Ponzi scheme
In September 2017, his spouse was arrested by federal agents at their home in New York City on charges of securities fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit those crimes.
He was accused of running a Ponzi scheme with Michael Wright and Joseph Meli that defrauded investors of $5.6 million by falsely claiming they had access to millions of dollars’ worth of concert tickets at face value through non-existent agreements with concert promoters.
According to a parallel civil complaint filed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, he was accused of using new investors’ cash to pay millions of dollars in gaming obligations and reimburse earlier investors.
On September 16, 2018, Carton resigned from WFAN following an indefinite suspension, with Esiason remaining the lone host of Boomer and Carton. He stated that he made the decision to give his old program “the best opportunity to succeed without further disruption.”
On November 7, 2018, he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison after a week-long trial in Manhattan federal court. His sentencing date was changed from February 27 to March 15 before being postponed until April 5. Carton was sentenced on April 5 and ordered to pay $5 million in restitution; he must surrender himself by July 15 to begin his sentence.
