She felt unable to inform her family that she had become in debt at this time despite having twice remortgaged her house. In 2006, her debt reached £10,000. She lost her job and was later accused of stealing £36,000.

In February 2008, she appeared in court, where villagers supported her and provided character witnesses. She pleaded guilty to false accounting, paid back the money and received a community order. After selling her shop, she became a cleaner, which she still does. In 2009, she met Alan Bates at a meeting of postmasters and mistresses fighting for justice, and they became close friends.

Eventually, an inquiry was launched which revealed that the Horizon system was faulty leading to her conviction being quashed in 2021. Upon returning home after receiving this news, the villagers organized a surprise party for her. She continues to stand for other subpostmasters and mistresses who were wrongfully convicted in relation to the scandal.
