“With great sadness, I must inform you all that our beloved friend, mentor and daughter Hydeia, passed away today after living with AIDS since birth,” he wrote alongside a photo of her. “Despite facing numerous challenges throughout her life, Hydeia remained determined to spread hope and positivity through education around HIV/AIDS.”
How Old Was Hydeia Broadbent?
Hydeia Broadbent was born in 1984 with undiagnosed HIV. She was 40 years old, at the time of her death. She made an appearance on a Nickelodeon special about HIV/AIDS in 1992. The special was about the disease. She shared her tale on a number of different television programs, such as Good Morning America, 20/20, and Oprah.
Hydeia Broadbent Parents: Loren And Patricia
Hydeia was first brought into Loren and Patricia Broadbent’s home as a foster child, but they decided to adopt her. It wasn’t until 1987 that they discovered Hydeia had contracted HIV.
Her biological mother abandoned her at a hospital in Las Vegas. Not much information has been disclosed about her. Three years later, Hydeia’s biological mother gave birth to another kid at the same hospital, and she also abandoned him there. Hydeia was the third child overall.
Both the mother and the child were tested for HIV at the time since it was mandatory to do so. The findings showed that both of them were infected with the virus. In a short amount of time after receiving the news from the hospital, the Broadbents decided to get Hydeia tested for HIV. Her findings were positive for HIV status.
Hydeia’s adoptive mother enrolled her in a research trial in hopes of finding a treatment that could help her. Despite facing serious health challenges like blood infections and fungal infections in her brain, Hydeia defied the odds and survived past childhood. Unfortunately, at the age of five, she was diagnosed with AIDS.
