French toast is one of the oldest known dishes in the world, and its origin dates back to ancient times, long before it was called โFrench toast.โ The earliest versions can be traced to the Roman Empire, where a similar recipe was found in a Roman cookbook called Apicius.
The Romans would soak bread in a mixture of milk and eggs and then fry it, mainly to avoid wasting stale bread. Over time, this idea spread across Europe and evolved in different cultures. In medieval Europe, especially in England and France, it became a popular way to reuse old bread and was known by various names such as โpain perdu,โ which means โlost breadโ in French.
The name โFrench toastโ became popular much later, especially in America, where it was associated with French-style cooking. Today, it is enjoyed worldwide in both sweet and savory versions, but its roots remain a simple solution for using leftover bread creatively.
