Ed Lauter , an American actor and screenwriter, died at the age of 74. Lauter’s career spanned more than five decades, during which he appeared in more than 200 television shows and movies. Some of his most notable roles include Captain engine room orderly Herbertson in The Longest Day (1962), Sergeant Muldoon in The Dirty Dozen (1967), Deputy Sheriff Martin Hedgepath in The Magnificent Seven (1960), and Coach George Bauer in Necessary Roughness (1991).

Edward Matthew Lauter is best known as the father of Ed Lauter Jr. He was a teacher and administrator at Maricopa High School in Arizona when his son Ed Lauter Jr. was born in 1970.

Lauter was born and raised in Long Beach, New York, the son of Edward Matthew Lauter and Sally Lee, a 1920s Broadway actress and dancer. He was of German and Irish ancestry.

After graduation from high school, he studied English Literature at Long Island University’s C.W. Post campus and received a bachelor’s degree in 1961. In college, he played basketball while studying English Literature. Lauter served in the United States Army for two years during his studies at university.

Ed Lauter Career Explored

Lauter’s first acting role was a minor part in the Broadway production of The Great White Hope, a boxing drama, in 1968. He was previously a stand-up comedian. His first cinematic performance was as a television series guest star in 1971’s Mannix. In 1972, he made his feature film debut as Dirty Little Billy in the Western Dirty Little Billy.

Lauter was a tall, balding actor who was known for his 6’2″ stature. He appeared in Alfred Hitchcock’s last film, Family Plot, with Bruce Dern, Barbara Harris, Karen Black, and William Devane. Lauter was delighted by Hitchock and asked him to appear in the romantic espionage thriller that he planned as his next picture; because to the director’s poor health and death in 1980 The Short Night never got made.

Lauter has appeared in numerous films, including several in 1972 alone. Lauter’s most recognized film roles include The Longest Yard (a.k.a. The Mean Machine) (1974), King Kong (1976), Magic (1978), Death Hunt (1981), Timerider (1982), Cujo (1983), Death Wish 3 (1985), My Blue Heaven(1990), The Rocketeer(1991 ), Seraphim Falls(2006 ), and The Artist(2011).
