Jennette McCurdy’s mother passed away from breast cancer in 2013, and she went to therapy. Moreover, she wrote, “Really, really intense therapy,” she says. It’s not hard to understand why: Her mother, Debra McCurdy, had been abusive throughout her life, pushing her into a demoralizing career in the entertainment world and encouraging anorexia among other forms of trauma.
McCurdy was a Nickelodeon star who performed on the hit show iCarly and Ariana Grande’s two-hander Sam & Cat before launching a country music career; however, after leaving the Hollywood machine following her mother’s death and focusing on herself, she recognized how essential it was for her to tell her own narrative. “I felt compelled to do it,” McCurdy says. “I couldn’t think about anything else until I got it out.”

McCurdy was born on June 26, 1992, in Los Angeles, California, to Mark and Debbie McCurdy. She is the youngest of four children and grew up in Garden Grove, California. She came from a “dysfunctional Mormon family” that she has described as dysfunctional. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when she was three years old, underwent several operations, chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant to fight the disease. In 2010, she was re-diagnosed with cancer and passed away in 2013, when McCurdy was 21 years old.
