Hader was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 7, 1978, the son of dance teacher Sherri Renee and air cargo company owner, restaurant manager, truck driver, and occasional stand-up comedian William Thomas Hader Sr.
He has two younger sisters, Katie and Kara. His background includes Danish, English, German, and Irish people as well as royal figures such as Charlemagne, Charles Martel, and King Edward I who were discovered in a Finding Your Roots episode in 2016.

Hader was educated at Patrick Henry Elementary, Edison Junior High, and Cascia Hall Preparatory School. He grew up with author Duffy Boudreau, who he’d later co-write with. He claims to have had a difficult time concentrating in school and “was always joking around.” He spent his leisure time watching movies and reading because he felt like an outsider.
