Ben Carson is an American retired neurosurgeon and politician who is currently serving as the United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Prior to his cabinet position, he was a candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 Republican primaries. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised by a single mother. He attended Yale University and the University of Michigan Medical School, where he earned his medical degree. He completed his residency in neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
During his time at Johns Hopkins, Carson became one of the most accomplished pediatric neurosurgeons in the world. He gained national recognition for his work separating conjoined twins. In 1987, he successfully performed surgery on an infant who had been born with two separate brains joined together at the base of the skull. In addition to his successful medical career, Carson has also written several books, including one autobiography. He has been a popular speaker on the lecture circuit and has appeared on several television shows.
Carson entered politics in 2015 when he announced his candidacy for President of the United States. He quickly rose to prominence in the GOP primary race, but ultimately lost the nomination to Donald Trump. In 2016, he endorsed Trump for president. Since taking office as HUD Secretary, Carson has been a vocal advocate for Trump’s policies on housing and urban development. After her divorce, Carson and his wife, fellow Detroit native Lacena “Candy” Rustin, met as students at Yale University in 1971 and married in 1975. They moved to West Friendship, Maryland, in 1988.
The pair have three sons named Rhoeyce, Benjamin J., and Murray, as well as numerous grandchildren. Their first son, Murray, was born in Perth, Australia, while Carson was on a residency there. In 1981, Carson’s wife became pregnant with twins before losing one of them in the fifth month of pregnancy.
Ben and Candy Carson purchased a 48-acre property in Upperco, Maryland, in 2001. Carson was operated on for prostate cancer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital on August 7, 2002, after being diagnosed with the disease. In 2013, Carson, his wife, and Carson’s mother relocated to West Palm Beach, Florida.
In February 2017, Carson purchased a $1.22 million home in Vienna, Virginia, and sold his West Palm Beach mansion for more than $900,000 in May 2017 shortly after his appointment as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Ben Carson is a very supportive father to his three kids: Rhoeyce, Benjamin Jr., and Murray. He frequently talks about how proud he is of them and their accomplishments. Carson is also very active in their lives, attending their sporting events and school functions.
Interestingly, Carson’s kids all have different career aspirations. Rhoeyce wants to be a doctor like her dad, while Benjamin Jr. is interested in politics and Murray is considering a career in the military. Regardless of what they end up doing, it’s clear that Carson will be there to support them every step of the way.
