Ronald McDonald’s origins began with Willard Scott, who performed as “Ronald McDonald, the Hamburger-Happy Clown,” in 1963 on three separate television spots under that name. These were the character’s initial three television advertisements.
At the time, Scott was employed by Oscar Goldstein, the owner of a number of McDonald’s restaurants in the Washington, DC region. According to numerous sources, Scott’s job consisted solely of playing the part of Ronald McDonald while giving credit for the mascot to Goldstein and his ad agency.
