There is one major problem: Frank Carter is already in prison.
As Tom, retired detective Pete Willis and Detective Amanda Beck investigate the disappearance, they discover that the crimes are connected to Frank’s past in ways they did not expect. The biggest twist is that someone close to Frank has continued his legacy.

Tom Kennedy moves into a new home with his young son Jake after the death of his wife. Their new life does not last long. Jake disappears, and the circumstances of his kidnapping remind investigators of an old case involving serial killer Frank Carter.
Frank had abducted children and was eventually arrested by detective Pete Willis. His crimes became associated with the frightening name “The Whisper Man.”
Now, years later, another child has disappeared in a similar way.

Why Is Frank Carter Called the Whisper Man?
Frank Carter earned the name Whisper Man because of the way he approached his young victims. His crimes became connected with a disturbing children’s rhyme about hearing whispers when a door is left open.

Norman Collins becomes an important suspect during the investigation. He has a disturbing interest in serial killers and is connected to people from Frank Carter’s past.
The investigation eventually uncovers bodies and evidence connected to the old Whisper Man case. Tony Smith, a victim who disappeared years earlier, is found buried beneath the house.
Norman had also been involved with Dominic Barnett, another person connected to Frank Carter.
However, Norman is not the new Whisper Man.
His connection to Frank helps the police understand that the imprisoned killer has continued communicating with people outside prison. Norman eventually takes his own life, leaving the investigation with an even bigger question: who is actually carrying out the new kidnappings?
Who Is the New Whisper Man?
The new Whisper Man is Francis Carter Jr., the son of Frank Carter.
This is the main twist of the movie.
Francis Jr. grew up carrying the shadow of his father’s crimes. After Frank was arrested, Francis was placed in witness protection and lived under another identity.
Instead of escaping from his father’s influence, however, Francis became increasingly obsessed with him. He wanted his father’s approval and eventually began copying his methods.
Francis therefore becomes the new Whisper Man.
The twist also gives the story a deeper meaning. Francis is not simply copying a famous serial killer. He is trying to become the kind of person he believes his father would admire.
How Does Pete Discover the Truth?
Pete returns to Frank Carter in prison because he knows that Frank may be able to provide information about Jake’s disappearance.
During their conversations, Frank talks about family, children and the need for a father’s approval. His words make Pete realize that the new killer may have a personal connection to him.
The investigation eventually reveals the truth about Frank’s son.
Francis Jr. has been living under a different identity and is connected to Jake’s surroundings. By the time the police understand who he really is, Francis has already taken Jake.
What Happens to Jake?
Francis Jr. takes Jake to the house connected to the original crimes. Amanda tries to stop him, but Francis manages to escape with the boy.
Pete eventually realizes where Francis is going and follows him. Tom also arrives at the house as the final confrontation begins.
Pete finds Jake and tries to protect him from Francis.
During the struggle, Francis attacks Pete and fatally stabs him with a screwdriver. Pete is badly wounded, but he manages to protect Jake and give his grandson a chance to escape.
Pete’s final act is therefore one of sacrifice. After spending years regretting his relationship with Tom, he finally gets the chance to protect his family.

Does Pete Willis Die?
Yes, Pete dies at the end of the movie.
Francis Jr. stabs him during the confrontation while Pete is trying to save Jake.
Pete’s death is important to the emotional ending because his relationship with Tom has been damaged for years. He spent much of his life dealing with the consequences of the original Whisper Man case.
By saving Jake, Pete gets one final opportunity to do what he could not always do for his own son: protect his family.
How Is Francis Carter Jr. Defeated?
After Pete’s sacrifice, Tom continues chasing Francis through the house.
The fight eventually reaches the attic. Tom knows that part of the attic floor is weak, and during the struggle Francis falls through the damaged section.
Francis survives the fall but is eventually captured by the authorities.
Jake is finally safe, but the movie is not finished with the Carter family yet.
What Happens to Francis Jr. at the End?
Francis Jr. is eventually taken to the prison where his father, Frank Carter, is being held.
This is the reunion Francis has wanted for years. He has spent much of his life trying to become someone his father would respect.
But Frank does not welcome him.
Instead, Frank kills his own son inside the prison cell.
Frank’s decision shows the cruel reality of Francis’s entire journey. Francis believed that becoming like his father would finally earn his love and approval. Instead, the man he wanted to impress becomes the person who kills him.
The ending makes it clear that Francis was never going to receive the approval he wanted from Frank.
Who Is Jake’s Imaginary Friend?
Throughout the movie, Jake talks about a mysterious girl who appears to him. At first, she seems to be an imaginary friend created by a frightened child.
Near the end, Tom discovers an old photograph and notices that the girl looks like Rebecca, Jake’s mother, when she was young.
The movie deliberately leaves this mystery open.
One explanation is that Jake created the girl in his imagination as a way to deal with his fear and grief. Another possibility is that the girl represents Rebecca’s spirit protecting her son.
The film does not give a definite answer, allowing the supernatural interpretation to remain possible.
What Does Mister Night Mean?
The idea of “Mister Night” connects Tom’s childhood with Jake’s experiences.
When Tom was young, he believed that a mysterious figure came to him at night. He later learns that the person was actually Pete, who secretly visited his son.
This changes Tom’s understanding of his childhood memories. Pete was not a perfect father, but his actions were more complicated than Tom had believed.
Jake’s imaginary friend works in a similar way. Whether the figure is real or imagined, she gives Jake comfort during a frightening period of his life.
Why Is the House Important?
The house is closely connected to the history of the Whisper Man.
Tony Smith’s remains are discovered beneath it, while other evidence connected to the old crimes is also hidden there.
The house therefore becomes a physical representation of the past returning to the present.
It is also where Francis Jr.’s story reaches its climax. The same place connected with Frank Carter’s crimes becomes the setting where his son is finally defeated.
