Rose Swisher was best known as the first wife of, Bill Russell, was born on February 12, 1934, to Charles Russell and Katie Russell in West Monroe, Louisiana. She was married to her college sweetheart, Bill Russell, and they had three children before divorcing in 1973. Russell married twice more before settling with his third wife, Marilyn Nault, until her death in 2009. At the time of his death, he was married to Jeannine Russell.
Russell was the first NBA player to visit Africa in 1959 and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. In 2013, he was arrested for bringing a loaded handgun to the Seattle–Tacoma International Airport.
Bill Russell died at the age of 88 on July 31, 2022, at his home in Mercer Island, Washington. He was regarded as “the greatest champion in all of team sports” by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Russell’s older brother was the noted playwright Charlie L. Russell.

Rose Swisher’s husband, Bill Russell, was a retired American basketball player who was widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He played college basketball at the University of San Francisco, where he helped lead the team to two NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. After graduating, he was drafted by the Celtics and quickly became the anchor of their defense, leading them to multiple championships and earning a reputation as a dominant shot blocker and rebounder.
Off the court, Russell was a prominent civil rights activist and a vocal advocate for racial equality. He participated in the March on Washington in 1963 and was a close friend of Martin Luther King Jr. Russell was also the first Black coach in NBA history, leading the Celtics to two more championships in the 1960s.
Russell was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, and in 2009 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States.
