Morticia Addams is a fictional character from the ‘Addams Family’ who has been portrayed by several actresses in various ‘Addams Family media’. Throughout the series’ television episodes and motion pictures, the spooky and eerie matriarch of the Addams Family has undergone multiple costume changes.
The members of the Addams family are Gomez and Morticia Addams, the married couple, Wednesday and Pugsley, Grandmama, Uncle Fester, Thing, Cousin Itt, and Lurch, their butler.
The Addams Family (1973)
The Addamses are a close-knit extended family possessing supernatural abilities and very macabre tastes. In the series, their powers are never explained in detail. Morticia’s pale complexion was adorned with a subtle rosy blush in the series. The heavy and dark eye makeup was replaced with a more delicate smoky eye, making her gaze appear attractive rather than haunting. Morticia’s signature long, straight hair had been styled into loose waves that cascaded down her back, adding a touch of softness to her otherwise severe image. The overall effect was undeniably striking, but some die-hard fans couldn’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for the original Morticia.

It is a 1991 American supernatural black comedy film which was commercially successful, making back almost seven times its production costs. In the movie, Fester Addams, the brother of Gomez, is the centre of a strange and eerie aristocratic family, who reunites with someone they think is a long-lost relative. The film also made some slight modifications to her costume so that Anjelica Huston would shine on screen. While the iconic black dress remained true to its comic origins, practical adjustments were made. The neckline was made more conservative adding a touch of elegance and padded shoulders were added, improving Morticia’s powerful and commanding presence.
Addams Family Values
Addams Family Values film was well received by critics. The film features almost all the main cast members from the original film. Addams Family Values is played more for very dark and macabre laughs. Aside from the fact that every Addams Family film strayed from Addams’ original vision, Morticia’s outfit in the follow-up changed even more. Because so many Morticia Addams Family costumes are straightforward, costume designers are occasionally pushed to add their own unique touch, even if it differs from the comic book.

Wednesday (2022-Present)

These small adjustments in the costuming of Morticia in the Netflix series ‘Wednesday‘ contribute to a visually high level imagination about the character.
Addams Family Reunion
The Addams Family Reunion were at least in keeping with Morticia’s personality. In order to provide some visual variations, Daryl Hannah’s Morticia costume included lace sleeves while still maintaining the mermaid design. The alterations made to Morticia’s costume in The Addams Family Reunion, in contrast to previous modifications, were at least fitting for her character.
The New Addams Family (1998-1999)
When compared to Addams’ comic strips, Morticia’s outfit from The New Addams Family is remarkably different. Her costume took on a whole new level of gothic glamour. Her dress was now a flowing masterpiece of lace and velvet, studded with intricate spiderweb patterns that seemed to dance in the dimly lit Addams Mansion. The pearls were replaced with a choker made of black onyx, giving her an air of mystery and elegance.
