Matías Recalt plays Roberto Canessa in ‘Society of the Snow’ who is one of the film’s central characters. Movie documents the accounts of all 16 survivors of the crash, many of whom Vierci knew from childhood.
Roberto Canessa was a 19-year-old medical student when Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed. Laura Surraco, a doctor’s daughter was his fiancée. He was an Old Christians Club musician.
Following days of “agonis[ing]” at having to use such a method of survival, Canessa advised his fellow survivors that in order to survive, they should consume the flesh of the crash victims. He hiked across the Andes for ten days with Fernando Parrado, looking for assistance for the surviving.
The real-life Canessa is one of the main figures of the 1972 Andes plane crash and offers a great deal of personal recollections that helped ass authenticity to Society of the Snow and the rest of the world’s understanding of the tragic event.
In the movie, Matías Recalt cast alongside Enzo Vogrincic Roldán as Numa Turcatti, Agustín Pardella as Nando Parrado, Agustín Della Corte as Antonio “Tintín” Vizintín, Simón Hempe as José Luis “Coche” Inciarte and Agustín Berruti as Bobby François.
