Jeļena Ostapenko is a Latvian professional tennis player who won the singles event at the junior Wimbledon Championships, in 2014. She ended the season as the world No. 79, in 2015. She made her Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. She reached the semifinals in doubles at the Madrid Open with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in May 2021. In 2023 Australian Open, she reached the quarterfinals and becoming the first Latvian women’s player to reach this level at this Major defeating top-10 player Coco Gauff. Jeļena Ostapenko was born to former Ukrainian footballer Jevgēnijs Ostapenko and Latvian-Russian tennis coach and former player Jeļena Jakovļeva. Jevgēnijs played professional football for Metalurh Zaporizhzhia in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia where Jeļena’s grandmother lives.
She has one half-brother, Maksim, who lives in the United States. Her legal name is Jeļena. When she was born, her parents’ desired name of Aļona was not on the Latvian name calendar, so she was named Jeļena after her mother.
When she was five years old, her mother introduced her to tennis and she idolized Serena Williams ever since.
