Colin Luther Powell, the fifteenth United States secretary of state and the first African American to hold the position, was born on April 5, 1937, in Harlem, a neighborhood of New York City’s Manhattan borough.

Colin Powell is the son of Jamaican immigrants Maud Ariel and Luther Theophilus Powell. His grandparents were both black Africans and Scottish people. Powell grew up in the South Bronx and attended Morris High School, which has since closed.

While at school, Powell worked at a local baby furniture store, where he picked up Yiddish from the Eastern European Jewish shopkeepers and some of the customers. He once spoke to a Jewish reporter in Yiddish, much to the man’s surprise.

After setting up his own accounting firm, Powell began providing advice to small businesses and individuals in search of a CPA. He was also active in the real estate business after earning a degree in geology from City College of New York in 1958 and declaring himself a “C-minus” student. Powell also has an MBA from George Washington University and an Honorary Doctorate of Public Service bestowed upon him in 1990.

Colin Powell is a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State, serving under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He was the first African American to serve in that position. Prior to his tenure as Secretary of State, Powell served as the National Security Advisor (2001), as Commander of the U.S.

Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989-1993), making him the highest-ranking officer in the U.S. military at that time. As Chairman, Powell played a key role during the Persian Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, helping to coordinate military action during these conflicts.
