Bassett was born and raised in Oceanside, California, to parents Taylor and Laura. He has five sisters, and was home-schooled. When he was 7, a decade before he played Ricky in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Bassett performed as J.V. Jock No. 2 in a community theater production of High School Musical at the age of seven years old. Since then, Basset has starred in over 30 musicals. He moved to Los Angeles when he was 16 to pursue acting and lived in his automobile for a while to make ends meet.

The Disney Channel alum attended the 2018 Radio Disney Music Awards, where he was seen reacting enthusiastically to Carpenter’s presence at the event, after appearing on High School Musical: The Series. Bassett plays piano, guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, and some saxophone. He disclosed his membership in the LGBTQ+ community during an interview on May 10, 2021. Bassett became critically ill in January 2021 and was admitted to the hospital with septic shock and heart failure: “The doctors informed me that I had a 30% chance of surviving if I hadn’t gone to the hospital by 12 hours.”
In August 2021, Bassett acknowledged in an interview that he’d battled with poor body image issues that had become “serious difficulties” around the time the first season of High School Musical: The Series was airing. In December 2021, Bassett stated that he had been sexually assaulted as a youngster and adolescent.
