Dolezal married Kevin Moore, in 2000. Moore, a medical student at Howard University at the time of their marriage, divorced Dolezal in 2004. Dolezal and Moore have two sons, named Franklin Moore (born 2016) and Izaiah Dolezal.
With the consent of her parents, Dolezal obtained legal guardianship of her 16-year-old brother, Izaiah Dolezal, in 2010.
Izaiah filed for freedom, claiming that in addition to being beaten, he and his siblings were also threatened with being placed in group homes if they disobeyed Larry and Ruthanne’s rules.

Rachel Dolezal said in an interview that Kevin expected her to look like a white woman. But she has portrayed herself as a black woman for years, including as an adjunct instructor in Eastern Washington University’s Africana Studies program.
She’d brought up this ex-husband and sort of painted this picture of him being abusive of her, and forcing her to live as basically white-presenting.
She claimed that Dolezal informed her that her former spouse had requested that she straighten, bleach, and maintain a pale complexion. Long before Dolezal’s family published a wedding photo of the pair, in which Dolezal appeared as she described, the interviews took place.
