Barbara Camer and Bill Camer first met in Australia and were married over five decades. They share two children together, a son Bradley and daughter Tina. Peter V’landys said,
“Bill was highly respected not just by his former colleagues in the jockeys’ room, but by all those in the racing industry that had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman of the turf. Bill had a long and distinguished career competing in a golden era of jockeys and will be greatly missed. We pass on our sincere condolences to his wife Barbara and their family.”
Bill Camer won the Cox Plate in 1954 and was a much-loved figure in the horse racing community. His victory in the prestigious race cemented his status as a jockey and brought him widespread admiration. Throughout his career, Camer continued to excel in his profession earning numerous accolades and leaving a lasting legacy in the sport.

Who was Bill Camer?
Bill Camer journey began in Italy where he was born. He later moved to Ayr, a rural town in Queensland, Australia. He started his career as a newspaper delivery boy.
He built a customised saddle for Doncaster Handicap and Stradbroke victor Karendi, who carried heavy weights because to his lightweight physique. In 1958 and 1970, Camer won the Stradbroke aboard two-year-old Wiggle and Divide and Rule.
Wiggle won five straight, including the Champagne Stakes before winning at Stradbroke. She won 21 of 55 races before being moved to the US.After winning the Epsom Handicap at Randwick in 1975, Camer continued his elite riding.
