Nizar Mardini is the cousin of Yusra and Sara Mardini who were Syrian former competition swimmer and refugee of the Syrian civil war. She was a member of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team (ROT) that competed under the Olympic flag at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Nizar assisted them on their journey to Germany and were accompanied by two cousins, who were with them all through the way.

The film also depicts the story of their sisterhood, in good and bad times. They swam alongside a sinking dinghy of refugees to lighten it, and eventually help 18 refugees to reach safety across the Aegean Sea while being smuggled from İzmir towards Lesbos.
In the film, Nizar’s mood plummets as he is forced to wait in a German hangar for his paperwork to be processed. He adds that his cousins have it somewhat easier since they know what they want and are working towards it.
