Maricet González was a Judo champion and Olympics star who was a two-time Pan American Champion before retiring in 2017. At the age of 34, after reportedly suffering a heart attack Maricet passed away. On January 21, a few days before the tragedy, she had breast augmentation surgery. Prior to retiring in 2017, she had an impressive career as a professional athlete, ranking number five in the world championships in 2011 and winning the double Pan American Championship.

Maricet González was born in 1990 in Havana. In 2008, she made her international debut at the age of 18. Her international debut marked the beginning of a successful career that would span over a decade. She came from mixed ethnicity.

With her natural ability, she went on to achieve numerous accolades and inspire young athletes around the world. In 2016, she won two silver medals at the continental judo Championships.

She lost to Israel’s Yarden Gerbi in the second round, her most common opponent throughout her career after defeating Nepalese judoka Phupu Lhamu Khatri in the first.

Maricet González was not married. She had also never hinted anything about her dating and personal life. She won the title of Pan American Champion in 2013, and then repeated the accomplishment in 2014.
