Gwen Casten, the 17-year-old daughter of Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL), died on Monday early morning at their family home in Illinois. The Downers Grove Democrat’s office stated that Gwen passed away without providing additional information about her death, and the family requests privacy. According to police, Gwen died at her family’s home in Downers Grove.
Police were called to the house in Downers Grove just before 7 a.m. “for an unresponsive 17-year-old female,” according to the outlet. ‘The subject was determined to be dead.’ Gwen was a political activist who followed in her father’s footsteps by advocating for social issues that she cared about, such as gun control.
Gwen’s mother, who liked to hear her daughter referred to as “the light of my life,” died just days after Rep. Casten said he had ‘tremendous pride’ in Gwen after she took the initiative to hold a ‘Stop the Bleed’ training at her school so that kids could learn how to pack a gunshot wound during a school shooting.
‘I have both tremendous pride that my daughter took the initiative to organize that and tremendous shame that we as a country are making it the responsibility of children aged 15, 16 and 17 to do what sitting United States senators don’t have the courage to do themselves,’ Rep. Casten told Newsy.
Gwen has worked with the United States Women’s National Soccer Team, USWNT. The youngster also served as a co-director of the March For Our Lives Illinois chapter, which is a youth-led movement working to combat gun violence.
In support of her father, who is running for a third term in Congress against fellow incumbent Democrat Rep. Marie Newman, Gwen appeared in a campaign video. In February, Casten’s campaign posted a photograph of the candidate with Gwen, who was holding a petition in her hand.
‘It’s a big year in the Casten household! Sean’s daughter will be voting in her first election and was able to sign the petition for her dad,’ his campaign tweeted.
