John Henry Ryan II is from Pittsford, New York, United States. Ryan was the youngest of three children, all of whom were born in Ohio. He grew up with his mother, older brother Joe, and older sister Julie. Ryan began composing songs in third grade, learning to play guitar and piano at an early age. Throughout his childhood, he wrote songs on a regular basis; even in high school, he made an album that he sold out of his locker.
When he was 16 or 17, he had to choose between music and sports, according to him, and music came the most naturally and made [him] the happiest. He submitted his only college application to Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
