She was primarily raised by her mother in the Denver, Colorado, suburbs after her parents’ divorce. Benoist has appeared in the psychological thriller Whiplash (2014), the comedy drama Danny Collins (2015), the crime comedy Band of Robbers (2015), the romantic Western The Longest Ride (2015), the action thriller Patriots Day (2016), Lowriders (2016), and Sun Dogs (2017). In addition to her acting career, Busiek has a heart for writing.

Her work includes novels such as The Man on the Wall and My Father’s Dragon, but she is perhaps best known for her 2000 novel series Thoroughbreds (2000–present), which features a group of contemporary horsewomen in Los Angeles who use their unique talents to combat crime. Deadline reported in February that Benoist is in negotiations to rejoin Berlanti Productions for the political campaign drama series. She’ll play Sadie McCarthy, a journalist who idolizes Tim Crouse’s Boys on the Bus book and quits her job to pursue a presidential bid, in june. Benoist will also co-produce the program.
