Jim Benoist is Melissa Benoist’s dad. He’s a great guy, and he’s been supportive of his daughter throughout her career. They divorced when she was thirteen years old. Her paternal great-grandfather was of French descent. She has two sisters: Jessica, a novelist, and Kristina, an ecological scientist, and five half-siblings from her father’s remarriage. She was primarily raised by her mother in the Denver, Colorado, suburbs after her parents’ divorce. A big part of her childhood in Colorado was spent exploring national parks and immersing herself in nature.

Benoist has appeared in the psychological thriller Whiplash (2014), the comedy drama Danny Collins (2015), the crime comedy Band of Robbers (2015), the romantic Western The Longest Ride (2015), the action thriller Patriots Day (2016), Lowriders (2016), and Sun Dogs (2017). In addition to her acting career, Busiek has a heart for writing.

Her work includes novels such as The Man on the Wall and My Father’s Dragon, but she is perhaps best known for her 2000 novel series Thoroughbreds (2000–present), which features a group of contemporary horsewomen in Los Angeles who use their unique talents to combat crime. Benoist played Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway in 2018, marking her stage debut.

In June 2022, it was revealed that Benoist and her production company Three Things Productions had renewed its overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group, and she would join HBO Max series The Girls on the Bus, which is inspired by a scene in Amy Chozick’s 2018 book Chasing Hillary, which was based on the author’s time covering Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign as a political reporter.

Deadline reported in February that Benoist is in negotiations to rejoin Berlanti Productions for the political campaign drama series. She’ll play Sadie McCarthy, a journalist who idolizes Tim Crouse’s Boys on the Bus book and quits her job to pursue a presidential bid, in june. Benoist will also co-produce the program.
