How was J. Robert Oppenheimer died?
J. Robert Oppenheimer died aged 62 from an intestinal infection complicated by a pulmonary embolism, in October 1972. Their son Peter received the ranch in New Mexico, while their daughter Katherine “Toni” Oppenheimer Silber acquired the beach house. After the FBI brought up the previous convictions against Toni’s father, she was denied security clearance for her chosen profession as a United Nations interpreter.
At the age of 32, she took her own life in January 1977, only three months after the termination of her second marriage. Her ex-husband discovered her at the family beach home, hanging from a beam. To be used as a public park and leisure space for the residents of St. John, as stated in her will.
The first home was destroyed by a storm because it was situated too near to the water. The Government of the Virgin Islands now operates a Community Centre in the neighborhood. In an Interview, J. Robert Oppenheimer said,
“The whole damn thing [his security hearing] was a farce, and these people are trying to make a tragedy out of it. … I had never said that I had regretted participating in a responsible way in the making of the bomb. I said that perhaps he had forgotten Guernica, Coventry, Hamburg, Dresden, Dachau, Warsaw, and Tokyo; but I had not, and that if he found it so difficult to understand, he should write a play about something else.”
